Christmas Carols

Nowell, nowell, nowell!
This is the salutation of th'angel Gabriel….

Sing, Choirs of angels….this album is full of angelic voices, with carols about angels singing in the heavens, about the angel's visitation to Mary, the mother of Jesus. We hope that you enjoy the warmth and splendour of the choral sound, and the mix of the familiar and unfamiliar in an unusual and rather special programme.

Singscape is one of the most exciting new choirs to emerge on the European concert and recording scene in recent years. It aims not only to perform and record choral works to the highest possible standards, but also to present its live concerts in ways which are visually appealing, so as to enhance communication of the sung texts to modern audiences. Singscape seeks to move away from bland presentation and uncover the visual and dramatic roots which lie at the heart of so much choral repertoire. It is a versatile and virtuoso choir, as this album illustrates, and it varies in size and format according to the needs of the programme to be performed. Likewise it collaborates with artists working in different art forms, the choice of artist and medium dependent upon the particular concert programme in hand. The singers are drawn from the ranks of some of the UK's finest professional choirs and are all soloists in their own right, an important factor which adds an extra dimension and character to the choral ensemble. Their wide-ranging experience and enthusiasm allows Singscape to perform medieval, romantic and modern music with equal amounts of style and panache.

Conductor Sarah Tenant-Flowers

Sarah Tenant-Flowers is one of the leading choral directors of her generation, working with both professional and amateur groups and in the field of arts education. With her successful record as an accomplished and experienced arts manager of groups such as The Sixteen and as Music Director of organisations such as Music at Oxford, she is able to bring a wide range of experience and knowledge to Singscape, the extraordinary and ground-breaking choir which she founded in 2000. She has worked with numerous prestigious orchestras, choirs and period instrument ensembles, including the City of London Sinfonia, the Britten Sinfonia, and the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work with Singscape, she is also music director of the multi-arts ensemble Figur'd Shade. She also directs several amateur choirs including the Harlow Chorus in Britain and, in Germany, the Kantorei der Friedenskirche of Düsseldorf.
